I have always had a love for opals. Not only is opal my birthstone, but it was my grandmother’s as well. Her birthday was four days after mine, and I was given her name. She wore an opal ring for several decades, until the day she passed, when it was given to me. As the reigning Natalie Reed I hope to carry on the tradition of opal jewelry. This is my first piece featuring an opal, and there will certainly be many more to come. This opal is a long way from home, but I have given it roots and a new story in the history of my Maine family, which goes back many generations.
In 18 karat gold, this one of a kind pendant features a beautiful 8.5 carat Ethiopian opal that radiates all the colors of the rainbow, accented with a rose cut diamond to finish it off. The sea flower was hand carved and cast using the lost wax process. It was originally inspired by the ruffled edges of coral. After the first clusters were cast, the spheres were added to the centers and so they became flowers, or as I like to think of them, ‘flowers of the sea’. All the gold encasing the gemstone was carefully hand fabricated and textured to highlight the beauty of the this stunning opal.
